On-Page SEO Checklist:

  • Keywords

Make sure you've identified keywords for each page of your site. These should be in the title tag, and featured prominently throughout the page. Don't keyword-stuff your pages, but by all means do let readers (and Google!) know what you page is about.
  • Title Tags

Very important! Make sure your primary keyword is in the page title tag.
  • Page URL

having your primary keyword in your page URL is extremely helpful.
  • Description Tags

Again, the primary keyword along with a well thought out description built to entice. Remember, there's a high chance part of this will be included in your search engine listing, so make it something someone will want to click.
  • H1-H6 Tags

Using these tags with keywords has a beneficial effect.
  • Main Content

Take pains to create extremely useful, readable and current content for your readers.
Update frequently, as Google looks for freshness.
  • Is my site well coded?

Ensure that your site is code compliant and adheres to current Web standards.
  • Do I utilize robots.txt?

Use a robots.txt file to announce any special indexing instructions to search engine bots.
  • Do I have a sitemap?

A biggie with Google, as this is a very useful tool for site visitors.
  • Any canonical issues?

Make sure to designate which URL you want to be the authoritative one; for example, www.metadas.com or metadas.com
If you don't do this, you'll end up splitting the backlinks you get to your site between the two, and slowing your rankings growth.
  • Is my site easily navigated?

Include easy and clear navigation on your pages, and make sure every page has a link back to your home page.
  • Does my site load fast?

Site speed is becoming more and more an issue. Visitors now give you on average less than 10 seconds, and Google has taken this into account in the search algorithm as well.
  • Do I link to authority sites?

Google likes to see that you are linking to authority in your niche. So do readers. It helps with trust and your own authority.
  • Do I link to my internal pages?

It's very good practice to link to other pages form your main content, and not only in a navigational menu. This is a great way to use anchor text for a sub-page about those keywords.
  • Do I have links to spam sites on my pages?

If you have links to spam sites on your pages, this falls under the heading of "linking to bad neighborhood's” to Google.
  • Have I fixed any broken links?

Broken links are a source of frustration for visitors and a sign of poor site maintenance to Google. Fix them!
  • Do I have excessive advertising?

A webpage filled with ads is something neither your visitors nor Google wants to see. Use ads, but choose wisely
  • Is my site social friendly?

With social media now a ranking factor, as well as a traffic engine, you'll want to be sure to make sure your site is social media friendly, and that all social sharing buttons work correctly.
  • Have I set up Google Analytics and Webmaster tools?

This one is important as it shows Google you are attempting to do things correctly, and moreover, there is a wealth of information and tools at your fingertips!

This may seem like a lot, but having these items in order will go a long way toward helping your rankings! On page SEO is getting far more attention as Google is combing through their SERPSSearch Engine Results Pages with an eye toward annihilating anything that smells unclean.

Moreover, they are looking for useful shareable content that people will go for, and their search algorithm has identified these factors as making that more likely to happen.

Aim for high-quality, valuable content and structure, and you'll come away the winner!
